The Federals used two
tin straps, with loops on them, to aid in loading and centering the projectile's fuze in
the Coehorn mortar. The two straps cross underneath and wrap completely around the
projectile and the ends of the straps are passed through the slits of the collar, folded
down, and set flat. This pictured specimen is missing a portion of one strap. This style
of Coehorn mortar projectile was used extensively in the Petersburg, Virginia,
Campaign. This projectile was recovered from City
Point, VA. General U.S. Grant's supply headquarters for the Siege of Petersburg.
