The sabot on this pictured projectile has three iron pins that protrude through
the copper plate and one center bolt flush with the sabot plate. The Confederates
manufactured this pattern for the British 12-pounder (3.5-inch caliber) Blakely rifle in
order to keep up with the demand for ammunition, since there was only a limited supply of
Britten projectiles imported from Great Britain. Note the impressions of the seven lands
and grooves of the Blakely rifle on the copper sabot of this fired projectile.
