This pictured projectile is named after its inventor, Commander John M. Brooke,
C.S.N. and is commonly called a rebated Brooke. There are six ratchets in the copper sabot
that correspond to the six cast-in ratchets on the shell base. A single square-headed bolt
holds the sabot on. The purpose of the rebated section (reduced diameter) was to decrease
the amount of surface area that needed to be turned on a lathe. Specimens have been
recovered in Nashville, Tennessee, and in the Atlanta, Georgia, area.
