Whitworth Pattern I, Sub-pattern II

This unfired non-battlefield Whitworth shell has a removable nose section which allowed iron segments to be loaded and arranged around the bursting charge. Three pins secured the nose in place. No battlefield recoveries in this Pattern I, Sub-pattern II, variety of Whitworth projectile and caliber are known to the authors.  For information about Sir Joseph Whitworth click here.
