This unfired specimen
was captured by the Confederates, reworked, fitted with a Confederate copper fuze plug,
and drilled on the side to accept iron case-shot balls. The side-loader plug is made
of lead. The lead sabot does not have flame grooves. There are two tin crossed
straps on the base of the sabot on this specimen. Only a few side-loader Dyer
projectiles are known to exist.
