This pattern has iron
case-shot balls and a lead plug sealing the side-loading hole. The copper sabot
projects below the iron base. The projectile's cylindrical body is slightly larger
than its nose. A similar specimen is noted that has an iron sabot. The
threaded fuze plug was hastily cross-threaded into the nose, causing it to extend farther
from the nose than usual. This variety of Read projectile is extremely
rare. The reason that this isn't named a Read-Parrott is the fact
that the copper sabot was cast first, placed in a mould, and the iron body
was poured around it. Dr. Read
patented this method and Robert Parrott didn't use this method when he
manufactured his Parrott projectiles.
