No flame grooves are needed for percussion-fuzed shells since they were designed
to explode on impact. Hotchkiss projectiles in this caliber were manufactured for use in
the 3-inch wrought iron (ordnance) rifle and not the 3-inch Parrott rifle. Benjamin
Berkeley Hotchkiss patented the brass percussion fuze on February 24, 1863, patent
