Read
This is an example of the classic style of bourreleted Confederate Read
projectile. The bourrelets were an attempt by the Confederates to save valuable time
in the production and machining of projectiles. In manufacturing the Read
projectile, the sabot ring (cup) of copper or brass was placed into a mold first and the
iron forming the body added next. This resulted in the sabot being embedded in the
cast iron body of the projectile. Go
