The battery smithy
The traveling forge put a working blacksmith's shop on two wheels and a limber. It carried a forge with bellows, an anvil, a supply of coal and iron, and the farrier's and smith's tools, letting a battery shoe its horses and repair iron fittings, tires, and hardware without leaving the column.
Together with the battery wagon, the traveling forge was essential to keeping a field battery mobile and in action on campaign.
