Engineer of the breach
Quincy A. Gillmore was a United States Army engineer who planned and directed the batteries that reduced Fort Pulaski in April 1862. By emplacing rifled guns on Tybee Island and breaching the fort's masonry in little more than a day, he gave a decisive demonstration that rifled artillery had rendered the brick fort obsolete.
He went on to direct heavy siege operations against the defenses of Charleston, work that further advanced the use of rifled siege artillery.
