Maker of the Ordnance Rifle
The Phoenix Iron Company of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, began manufacturing wrought-iron cannon in 1855. During the Civil War it produced the 3-inch Ordnance Rifle, whose wrought-iron construction gave it the strength and reliability that made it the standard Federal rifled field piece.
Guns and related products from the firm are sometimes found marked with the initials P.I.Co.
