Explosive Parrott
The Parrott shell was the bursting projectile of the Parrott rifles. It carried a cavity, charge, and fuze, and at its base an expanding sabot, of brass or of a wrought-iron ring or cup depending on the pattern, that was forced out into the rifling on firing.
Parrott shells were produced in the whole range of Parrott calibers, from the 10- and 20-pounder field rifles to the heavy siege and seacoast guns, and they are attributed by their base sabot and body form.
