Soldier and author
John Gibbon was a professional artilleryman whose Artillerist's Manual, published on the eve of the war, became a standard reference on guns, ammunition, and gunnery for officers of both sides. Its tables and instruction reflected the state of American artillery just before the great changes of the war.
Gibbon went on to a distinguished career as a Union general, but his manual kept his name familiar to students of Civil War ordnance.
