Ordnance instructor
James G. Benton was a United States ordnance officer whose Course of Instruction in Ordnance and Gunnery, used at the Military Academy, was among the standard technical texts on artillery and ammunition in the Civil War era. It laid out the principles of guns, projectiles, and gunnery for a generation of officers.
Benton also served in and commanded the national armories, including Springfield, contributing to the manufacture as well as the theory of American ordnance.
